STORM: From Whitman’s Election Day to Ours (Part II)

In collaboration with #VoteThatJawn and the Kelly Writers House, PCMS is hosting a live-stream event that explores young people's civic engagement through the arts. Join us for compelling poetry and the world premiere of "the still, small voice" for double string quartet by composer Kenji Bunch.

This event is part of a larger project. Part I was hosted by Kelly Writers House, on September 17th, featuring original poetry by Philadelphia Youth Poets Laureate: Cydney Brown, Soledad Alfaro-Allah, Siduri Beckman, Mia Concepcion, Dave Jones, and Wes Matthews. This reading explored civic engagement and celebrated the youth vote through poetic responses to Walt Whitman's poem, “Election Day: November 18.” Special guests also include members of the Catalyst Quartet and Trapeta B. Mayson.

STORM: UNIT STUDY & POETRY SUBMISSION
This special unit study for high school students explores Walt Whitman's powerful poem, "Election Day: November 1884", and its connection to civic engagement and the youth vote today. The study culminates with written responses to Whitman. Students can submit their poems via social media and one will be selected and read on October 30th, when we continue exploring young people's civic engagement through the arts.
